1924 - The Great Experiment

Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine, was one of the new additions to the 1924 team. Because of his youth, he was described by General Bruce as 'the experiment of the Expedition'. His assistance with the oxygen apparatus and his obvious skill as a climber, endeared him to his fellow team members.

Posthumous portrait of Sandy Irvine, by the Expedition artist Francis Helps.

Here, Irvine writes to Raymond Greene (brother of Graham, the novelist, and later a member of the 1933 Everest expedition) in November 1923 regarding one of the many receptions held at Oxford to celebrate his inclusion in the 1924 party.
